A comprehensive history of English literature. With numerous tissue-guarded plates throughout. Including chapters on Caxton, Foxes' Book of Martyrs, Shakespeare and Paradise Lost, amongst many others. Sir William Robertson Nicoll was a Scottish Free Church minister, journalist, editor, and man of letters. Thomas Seccombe was a miscellaneous English writer and, from 1891 to 1901, assistant editor of the Dictionary of National Biography, writing over 700 entries.
