When writing the Travels, Swift, already over fifty, renowned for his mordaunt wit, planned a satire on the politics and manners of his day rather than an enthralling story of discovery. Biting satire the reader will find in the Voyages and a penetrating commentary on Swift’s times, but he will also be carried away by the sheer entertainment of the voyages to Lilliput and Brobdingnag, in Gulliver’s amusing company.
