Despite dying young at the age of 34 Katherine Mansfield had achieved a fierce reputation as one of the most talented writers of the modern short story in English. Admired by Virginia Woolf and from 1910 had publications in periodicals like the New Age through to the five volumes of stories published before her death. She was seen as innovative, clever, accessible and psychologically very aware and one of the pioneers in the creation of the short story.
