Description
The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table Oliver Wendell Holmes
The author, who was a physician by profession, achieved fame as a writer and was one of the best regarded American poets of the 19th century. This is one of his most popular works; it is a collection of essays, originally published in the ‘The Atlantic Monthly’ between 1857 and 1858. The essays take the form of a chiefly one-sided dialogue between the unnamed author and the other residents of a New England boarding house, who are known only by their profession, location at the table or other defining characteristics. The topics discussed range from an essay on the unexpected benefits of old age to where to site a dwelling and comments on the nature of conversation itself and each essay includes a poem.
