A satire on the greed and political corruption in post-Civil War America, in the era now referred to as “the Gilded Age”. Twain’s collaborator was a neighbour and friend, they were challenged over dinner by their wives to write a novel together, one that was an improvement on the standard fare.

Rarely seen First U.K. single volume edition, the first English edition, published by Routledge in three volumes, had come out a decade earlier, in December 1873, simultaneous with the Hartford edition; that three-decker is today extremely scarce.
