Description
Proud Northern Lady by Martin Holmes
Lady Anne Clifford (1590-1676) was born at Skipton and died at Appleby. In between she was Countess in succession of Dorset, Pembroke and Montgomery. She lived through the reigns of four monarchs and the Commonwealth. She defied King James, she defied Cromwell, and she survived them, and her husbands, to leave an indelible mark and memory in the places and among the people who knew her. Lady Anne fought for the right to hold Skipton Castle, and other properties in Westmorland and the West Riding, rather than watch them be bequeathed to a distant male relative. She was responsible for extensive preservation and restoration of her properties preserving many of them for today.
