Description
Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh
This inventive satire depicts the “Bright Young Things” of 1920’s Mayfair, a group to which the author himself belonged. These bohemian socialites lived in a whirlwind of drug-fuelled parties and extravagant practical jokes, outraging their elders and delighting the tabloid press.
The novels anti-hero is the hapless Adam Fenwick-Symes, whose parodic pursuit of the beautiful Nina sees him extracting money from her senile father, who mistakes him for a vacuum cleaner salesman. However, beneath this inconsequential scene lurks the mood of unease peculiar to the inter-war era.
