Description

Two Tales of the Congo Joseph Conrad

To Conrad the Congo was ‘Fascinating – deadly – like a snake’, and his early experiences of that great riverr worked powerfully upon his imagination to produce the two stories in this book. Both are about Europeans isolated at remote trading stations, but while the ironically entitled ‘Outpost of Progress’ is raw and simple in its telling, short and direct, ‘Heart of Darkness’, much longer, is as terrible as it is moving. The two stories are illustrated by Dolf Reiser who lived for some years in Africa, and show the influence of the strength and simplicity of its primitive art.
