Description

The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien

The tales of the Silmarillion were the underlying inspiration and source of J.R.R. Tolkien’s imaginative writing: he worked on the book throughout his life, but never brought it to a final form. Long preceding in its origins The Lord Of The Rings, it is the story of the First Age of Tolkien’s world, the ancient drama to which characters in The Lord Of The Rings look back, and in which some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part. Tolkien called this ongoing work the ‘branching acquisitive theme’ from which emerged the Lord of the Rings. His son Christopher undertook the task of rendering down a lifetime’s notes into one manageable volume. Then along came Ted Nasmith, a brilliant and dedicated illustrator, who undertook this supreme commission, and he has given the Tolkien fan a set of extraordinary paintings that illustrate the key moments in this work. The artwork by Ted Nasmith provides a fantastic cover in black, red and gold and the back cover in blue, white, green and flesh tones is magical. Add to this the eighteen further beautiful paintings which only enhance the tale and coloured end papers by Nasmith make this book very desirable indeed and one that will increase in value.
