Description

Landscapes of Memory Turner Illustrating Scott by Gerald Finley

The association between J. M. W. Turner and Sir Walter Scott began in 1818 and lasted intermittently until the writer's death in 1832. It centred on Turner's Commissions to illustrate Scott's Provincial Antiquities and Picturesque Scenery of Scotland, and the Poetical Works. After Scott's death, Turner also illustrated the Prose works and Lockhart's classic life. The author sets his theme in the context of Turner's evolution as illustrator, discussing his methods of sketching and of developing sketches into watercolours for the engraver, and explaining how his style was affected by such technical matters as the change from copper-to steel-engraving. He also offers evidence that many of Turner's designs were intended not only to depict locations referred to in Scott's writings, but – symbolically – to commemorate Scott, and Turner's association with him.
