A Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe

A Journal of the Plague Year being observations or memorials of the most remarkable occurrences as well public as private, which happened in London during the last great visitation in 1665. A Journal of the Plague Year is in fact a novel, and presented as an eyewitness account of the events at the time. It was written in the years before it was published in 1722. Daniel Defoe was only five years old in 1665, the year of the plague. The book was published only with the initials H. F. and it is considered by scholars to be probably based on the journals of Daniel Defoe’s uncle, Henry Foe. The book is very realistic. Defoe writes about exact neighbourhoods, streets, and houses in which events took place. It includes tables of plague deaths and discusses various accounts and anecdotes received by the narrator. The novel is often compared to Samuel Pepys diary of the actual, contemporary accounts of the plague.
