From Caligari To Hitler by Siegfried Kracauer
A Psychological History of the German Film by Siegfried Kracauer. This book examines German history from 1921 to 1933 in light of such movies as The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, M, Metropolis, and The Blue Angel, in which it traces recurring visual and narrative tropes that expressed a fear of chaos and a desire for order, even at the price of authoritarian rule. A study of German films between the two world wars, in the twenties and thirties, as a analysis of deep hidden psychological attitudes and dispositions in pre-Hitler Germany, 1918 through 1933. This is followed by a study of propaganda and Nazi war film.
