Description

The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Master Humphrey's Clock by Charles Dickens

Dickens' last and unfinished novel. The first instalment was published in April 1870, while the last appeared in September, three months after Dickens' death. Thus, only six numbers, out of the twelve which were to make up the story were ever published.

After the publication of Nicholas Nickleby in 1839, Charles Dickens resigned his editorship of 'Bentley's Miscellany' to produce a weekly periodical, Master Humphrey's Clock (1840), consisting of short stories, essays and a miscellanea 'entirely of original matter' much in the style of Addison's 'Spectator'. To make the periodical 'go', Dickens revived a scattering of Pickwickians, including Mr Pickwick and the Wellers.
