William Makepeace Thackeray never intended to be a jounalist. He had a talent for caricature and studied painting in a desultory fashion, but he certainly didn’t see himself actually having to earn a living. Indeed he may never have been launched onto the literary scene had it not been for an unwise investment on the part of Thackeray’s stepfather, which deprived him of his generous private income at the age of twenty-two. Spurred on by love, he took a job as Paris correspondent of The Constitutional and Public ledger and thus embarked on a chaotic marriage and ten years of hectic journalism to make ends meet. His output was prodigious and infinite in its variety. Articles ranged from serious essays and sensitive observation to lampoons and brash satire. In 1847 the success of Vanity Fair established him as an author, and gave rise to the more worthy, but far less interesting, work of his later years. As Margaret Forster’s lively selection shows, nothing could quite surpass the Thackeray who preached, fulminated, entertained, amused and illustrated his way through those glorious ‘penny-a-line’ days.

Margaret Forster, one or the Folio Society’s finest authors was commissioned to edit this selection of some of the finest examples of journalism by Thackeray and illustrated by his own pen and ink drawings. In addition to a twenty four page introduction, Margaret Forster has introduced many of the selected pieces with biographical notes.
