Twelve Years An American Boyhood in East Germany by Joel Agee

Twelve Years An American Boyhood in East Germany; In the fall of 1948, a Soviet freighter laid anchor at Warnemünde, a Baltic seaport northwest of Berlin. Among the passengers who disembarked were Bodo Uhse, a German Communist writer returning from exile in Mexico; his American wife, Alma, their infant son, Stefan; and Joel, Alma's eight year-old son by a previous marriage to the American writer James Agee. The Uhses settle in Gross-Glienicke, a village bisected by the East-West border twenty kilometres from Berlin. Joel learns German and joins the Young Pioneers, and as he grows into adolescence, it becomes apparent, comically and painfully in turn, that he has little in common with the thoroughly pragmatic, and political world surrounding him. Writing from his unusual perspective as a member of a family that voluntary chose to live behind the Iron Curtain. Joel Agee proves himself, with his first book to be a natural storyteller and a master of evocative prose.
